When you find a spiritual teacher after a few years of observation, one who you think is worth it, ask for the real thing. Don't ask for the petty stuff.  Sometimes in trouble, one asks for such things, it's okay.  However, always keep in mind that what you have to look for is That.

In India, the wandering teacher is called a Parivrajaka - one who continuously walks in search of the truth. Once the truth is found, the teacher must take it door-to-door.

The worship of the teacher shouldn't take so much precedence that the teaching is forgotten.

When a spiritual teacher is blunt, he is doing his duty of guiding or shocking people out of their illusions. Already, were in illusion. Now, why create more illusions besides this?

The idea of the teacher should be to make you self-reliant. If a teacher makes you totally dependent, then there are either two reasons for that: one, he wants you to be always dependent on him, and the other is he is probably dependent on you.
